Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power.

I highly recommend the school Expanish (www.expanishvolunteer.com) for Spanish language courses. Now I am looking into volunteer programs, and they offer them, i just wanted to see if anyone has any comments on taking volunteer placements through a institute or if it is better to go directly to the source?? Any ideas?

I have spoken to the staff at Expanish and they have great programs for what i think to be a good price! one time fee of $450.. thats for up to 6 months of volunteering..seems pretty good. Plus, theey have quite a few programs and you still get all the extras that they offer through their institutes, like activities, workshops, trips, etc... So that's cool. Think I will book it through them, but still wanted to put this question out there and see what you all think!

Thanks!!!

In restaurants, it's customary to tip about 10% of the bill, but in times of economic distress Argentines frequently overlook the custom. In general, waiters are poorly paid, so if you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip. Even a small propina (tip) will be appreciated, but note that restaurant tips can't be added to a credit card bill.

Taxi drivers don't expect tips, but it's customary to round up to the nearest peso if the difference isn't much.

hello

my partner and i are interested in coming to buenos aires and staying for a year. we'd like to spend time learning spanish, learning about the culture, and doing a little traveling. so far, it would seem that we are only permitted to stay for less than 3 months. does anybody have suggestions on ways to be able to stay longer? i haven't posted on any forum before so if i don't reply to your response, it may be because i don't know how to get it! i'm going to try to learn now! any input or suggestions are welcomed. if there's no way it will be possible to spend a year in argentina, other suggestions are welcomed too.

hi…I'm going to BA in Jan. Does anyone know of a good local tour guide? I'm still just getting my info together, so I'm open to walking, being driven or public transportation. Also, I know good guides sell out fast, so if I could make arrangements before I go, that would be great, so if there is a website or email address that would help. Thanks!

Hi there,
I´m looking to spend some time (couple of weeks to a month) in a working farm in the Patagonia region. I know that there are a lot of so called ¨volunteering programs¨, where you only pay for accomandation and food, but to me it´s looks a bit corny. I´m looking for something real where you can acctualy work in a farm like the locals do (and not necessarily get paid for this).
So if someone knows a way to contact farm like that, or maybe someone whe did it before, I´ll be more than happy to hear about it.

Cheers,

My partner and I (we are 55 years old) have been willing to do a trip to South America for ages. Finally, I think we are going to Argentina. I checked on the web trying to find a serious travel agency which offers custom-made trips, and I found one which seems interesting: http://www.argentina-excepcion.com

Hello!
I am traveling to Argentina from 12.28-1.15 and will be starting in Buenos Aires, but I am very interested in an affordable estancia stay, I love to horseback ride and my partner likes to fly fish. Can anyone recommend something?

Is there also an estancia in Mendoza that does wine tours or is close to a vineyard?
thank you for your help!

I´m looking for a calling card that is easy and common to find anywhere in Argentina (I´m in missiones specifically) that gives you cheap rates to the US. So far the only thing I´ve found is a world calling card from Telecom the national telephone service but no one seems to have any information on the rates per minute. If anyone has any information that can help I´d greatly appreciate it.
