i like the idea of the vacuum packs, handy for cold weather clothes when u dont need them, saves space. It can be months when u dont need them.
Id add a sleeping bag to list. For me personally taking a tent is a must there are plenty of cheap light weight ones about. Camping is always the cheapest option when your on a tight budget.

I recently went on a study abroad trip and was there for a week visiting several different businesses and learned some really cool stuff.
The one I would tell you to look up is the Argentina "Dirty War". It's a very interesting part of their history when the militarian government was supposedly involved in kidnappings and things of anyone who opposed them. I'm not sure of all the details but it wasn't that long ago... in the 70's and 80's I believe.
