Sunday was the Day of the Reader in Argentina, a day that celebrates both the importance of reading and the birthday of one of Argentina’s most important writers, Jorge Luis Borges. To celebrate this day, only signed into law last Thursday, many important figures in Buenos Aires attended a ceremony in the Salón Dorado of the Casa de la Cultura. Among those there were the mayor, Mauricio Macri, the famous writers Marcos Aguinis and Santiago Kovadloff, and the President of the Jorge Luis Borges Foundation. According to La Nacion, the Day of the Reader puts the individual reader first in importance—more important that any suggestion the government may make about the need to read. Ultimately, individuals must decide they value literacy and reading, as this day encourages them to do.
