This past weekend and through this week, many parts of Argentina are receiving the long awaited rains that usually come with the arrival of spring. According to Farm Futures, the weather has turned around over the past several days in Argentina as well as Brazil, allowing Argentine farmers to begin planting some of their summer crops, which include corn and sun flowers. After an unusually dry and mild winter, these rains—up to two inches in some areas—are extremely important to the country’s crops. The extreme drought up until this point had been causing crop failures and many large fires in the north of Argentina. With the always hot summer ahead, farmers need these rains and more now to help ensure that Argentina continues to be one of the largest bread baskets in the world in 2008.
